Water early in the morning, preferably between 3 and 10 a.m. In fact, many cities require that you conclude all irrigation by 10 in the morning anyway.

Winds are lightest in morning hours, so spray patterns are more uniform.

Less water is lost to evaporation. And, by watering in the morning, plants’ leaves will stay wet for shorter periods of time. That helps lessen the impact of diseases.

These tips air each week on Dig In®.  The TV show provides water conservation tips – hoping to help save water in the Dallas metroplex. Be sure to catch these tips this Saturday on KDFW FOX 4 at 6:00am.

Each week Dig In provides water conservation tips – hoping to help save water in the Dallas metroplex. Be sure to catch these tips each Saturday  on KDFW FOX 4 at 6:00am.

Here is this week’s tip:

Invest in a “smart” controller.  Your licensed irrigation contractor can install it for you for only a few hundred dollars.

It will be programmed to monitor weather conditions, soil types, sun or shade, slope, types of plants and local watering restrictions.

Water savings can be up to 50 percent, while plant health and vigor is maintained.

  • Conduct an “irrigation audit” at least a couple of times every year.
  • Advance your sprinkler system through all of its stations.
  • Look for broken, missing or misaligned heads.
  • Trim grass, ground covers and shrubs as needed to allow normal spray patterns.
  • Watch for wet spots that suggest a valve might be stuck partially open.
  • Adjust your controller so that all stations dry out at about the same rate.
